Why do people come to counselling or psychotherapy?
People seek counselling/psychotherapy for a variety of reasons.
Some realize they want to make changes due to feeling stuck, feeling unhappy or simply for support with an ongoing issue.
Most people go through periods of feeling down or low but when someone is depressed they may feel persistently sad for weeks or months, rather than just a few days.
Depression is more than simply feeling unhappy or fed up for a few days and people can’t simply “snap out of it”. With the right support and treatment however, people CAN recover.
Stress is your body’s was of responding to any kind of demand or threat whether real or imagined.
Chronic stress causes symptoms such as headaches, low energy, insomnia, chest pains, frequent illness and aches and pains.
Bereavement / Grief and Loss
The death of a loved one can leave us with overwhelming pain and a sense of loss or for some, a numbness to emotions.
Similarly a relationship breakdown, end of career or life changing event can also leave us feeling similar emotions.
Have you been hurt, betrayed or abused?
Perhaps this is why you find it difficult to trust others? Therapy can help you explore why you feel so negative about people and help you to understand this and rebuild confidence in yourself.
Anxiety & Panic Attacks
Do you fear the anxious thoughts and feelings happening? Is anxiety Overwhelming? Do you fear getting it wrong?
Feeling vulnerable, guilty and shame are all commonly linked to anxiety.
Perhaps its time to get support?
Are you critical of yourself? Do you lack empathy and compassion for yourself? Is it time to stop self-loathing?
We can work together to help improve your sense of self.
Do you “fly off the handle”?, Are people scared of your reactions?
Feeling angry is a valid emotion, It is how we display anger that becomes a problem. It doesn’t mean you’re a bad person but merely not in control of your reactions.
“Is recovery Possible? The answer is YES. The powerlessness that makes us believe that “we can’t recover” is a symptom of trauma itself. It is an outdated belief system”

What happens in counselling?
Firstly, you will be offered a brief telephone conversation and then a 50 minute assessment session to discuss your issue and to ensure that we can work together to help you move forward. We will initially agree to meet weekly if possible and work through the issues you’re struggling with. Therapy can be short or long term depending on the issues causing distress. Every person is unique so therapy is tailored to the individual.
